International Museum Day

International Museum Day
International Museum Day is celebrated annually on May 18.

The celebration of this date has taken place since May 18, 1977, following a proposal by ICOM – International Council of Museums (a UNESCO organization).

On this day, several museums offer free admission, making it possible to visit their exhibitions and collections, as well as participate in initiatives prepared to commemorate International Museum Day. Museum opening hours are extended so that more people can visit the country’s museum spaces.

Every year, a central theme is chosen to celebrate International Museum Day: The main objective of a museum is to safeguard and preserve historical and cultural heritage of global or local importance.
Museums carry out scientific studies necessary for understanding and establishing the meaning and ownership of this heritage.
In this sense, museums contribute to generating a global ethic based on the practice of conserving, protecting, and promoting the values of cultural heritage.

The theme of International Museum Day in 2026 is:

"Museums Uniting a Divided World"

The theme was announced by the International Council of Museums and highlights the role of museums as spaces for:
dialogue, inclusion, peace, unity among cultures and communities, and the preservation of collective memory.

This year’s proposal seeks to show that, in a world marked by conflicts, inequalities, and polarization, museums can help bring together people, generations, and different societies.
The educational mission of a museum, regardless of its nature, is just as important as its scientific mission.
Museums are also places where the relationship between culture and nature is displayed, and there is a growing number of museums focusing their interests on science, nature and technology.
