Beaches in the South of Benguela

Benguela, like other provinces in Angola, has beautiful beaches with excellent conditions for relaxation, swimming, or water sports.

Additional Information:

  • Morro do Sombreiro - Morro do Sombreiro is a mountain located in Benguela. After a stone lighthouse was built in 1969, it became a tourist attraction. The path to reach the summit consists of trails in the middle of nowhere, ideal for the more adventurous. Upon reaching the top, you'll find a 180-degree view of the sea. The beach below the mountain showcases various shades of blue and green with white sands, and access to it is only by boat. From the summit, on the right, you'll have a view of the entire coast, starting from Santo António beach, passing through Morena beach, and ending at the sides of Catumbela. On the left, you can see the tip of Baía Farta.
  • Caotinha Beach - Caotinha Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Benguela, a province known for its coastline rich in stunning beaches. With very clear waters, it is a small beach with a length of about 100 meters, accessed by walking around Morro da Caota. It is very popular because it is close to the city compared to other beaches, and it is also visited for its beauty and well-preserved nature. It has one of the highest concentrations of beauty per square meter: breathtaking with its combination of rocks and transparent waters, making it an excellent spot for diving and sport fishing enthusiasts. These attributes justify it being one of the candidates for the Seven Natural Wonders of Angola.
  • Caota - Caota is one of the several fishing villages on the Benguela coast. Transformed into a passing place, Caota deserves a closer look. Walking along this white sandy beach squeezed between the hills that pierce the sea conveys tranquility. Without the sometimes uncomfortable hustle and bustle of the main beaches along this coastline. Here, the waters are crystal clear, and life has its own rhythm of small seaside places. Colorful fishing boats come and go. Men launch their small wooden boats into the sea, rowing and rowing to where only they know the abundant schools of fish in these waters. On land, fish dries under the scorching sun, ready to be transformed into a delicacy. Casuarina trees line up here and there, casting shade that only they know how to project from the tops of their sandy feet. Underneath them, small shipyards hammer the skeletons of traditional boats that soon take shape and tell stories of the sea. Other boats - old, rusty, ghosts - remain stranded in the bay of Caota.
  • Baía Azul - Baía Azul is a beach in the southern province of Benguela, Angola. It is located south of Praia Morena and stretches for 3 km. It owes its name to the region's waters with a strong blue hue. Baía Azul is considered the "mother" of Benguela's beaches. With its unique beauty, the beach is one of the country's most important natural tourist destinations.
  • Baía Farta - Baía Farta is a city and municipality in the province of Benguela, Angola. It covers an area of 6,744 km² and has a population of around 110,000. It is bordered to the north by the municipality of Benguela, to the east by the municipalities of Caimbambo and Chongoroi, to the south by the municipalities of Camacuio and Namibe, and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean. It is an important fishing center. The tip of Baía Farta is teeming with fish gliding in the cold waters of the Benguela Current. A renowned beach, the fishing center of the province is a mix of new projects and ruins of what once was. Small Baía Farta has strong hands of fishermen. The nets scattered along the beach are the perfect symbol of this land of abundant sea, a fame that has never faded over time. A visit to Benguela is incomplete without going to Baía Farta. The place is picturesque and bears deep marks of the old fishing and fish processing industries - some deactivated, others still in operation, and some on the path to revival. The sandy beach surrounding the bay is the workplace of hundreds of families. A stroll along the beach is a parade of artisanal fishing boats with creative names and colors. And even typical boats built with intertwined branches, still in use today.
  • Praia Da Macaca  - Just a few kilometers from Baía Farta, in a bend of the road that skirts the semi-desert of central-southern Angola, Praia Da Macaca is a beach with palm trees and coconut palms, dotted with salt pans. Natural heritage that reminds us of the days when Benguela was a serious fishing zone. The monkeys that abound in this area, small and cunning, gave the name to the beach, which is known in the region for its salt pans - the first to appear in the region, back in the day. In total, there are three hectares of land divided into small squares, where white crystals and seawater gradually accumulate in a dry wash. They are one of the province's strong assets. In recent years, they have been restored and expanded several times, and projections - those eternal goals - point to a total capacity of several thousand tons of salt per month.
  • Praia do Chamume  - Chamume Beach is a very pleasant place, where the white sand and transparent water await us to enjoy this magnificent ocean. Access to this beach is simple, starting from Baía Farta, there is a path that leads us first to Praia da Macaca and then, passing through the salt pans, takes us to Chamume.
