Complementary Information
  • Our Catumbela — Catumbela is a place known to those traveling between Lobito and Benguela, but its identity is often unknown to tourists visiting the region.
The city has a majestic bridge and an airport, making it an intermediate point between the capital and the busy port of Lobito. With its rich history and delicious cuisine, Catumbela is a true Angolan treasure.
"The name Catumbela comes from a soba who lived there. Quitumbela was his name." He lived with his people, the Ndombe, on the left bank of the river, near swamps.
On the other side of the waterway, famous for its large crocodiles, lived farmers from Quissanje, Cahula, and Hanha.
  • Catumbela River — The Catumbela River is a river in Angola.
It rises in the Cassoco mountain range and flows into the Atlantic Ocean, south of the city of Lobito.
After a course of 240 km, it supplies water to the city and the port of Lobito.
Its main tributaries are the Cuíva River on the right bank and the Cubal River on the left bank.
  • Fort of St. Peter — The Redoubt of São Pedro of Catumbela, also known as the Fort of Catumbela, is located in the town of Catumbela, in the province of Benguela, Angola.
The first stone for its construction was laid on October 5, 1846. It was classified as a Public Monument by official decree no. 8579 of June 17, 1954.
It was built on top of a hill, in a dominant position on the left (southern) bank of the Catumbela River, by Portuguese forces in the context of the repression of the Catumbela and Dondo Grande revolts (1846–1848).
  • Catumbela Weir — Along a dirt road, located on the right bank of the Catumbela River (for those going upstream)...
This is one of the must-see places for those who enjoy nature, identity, and contact with local communities.
During the route, visitors are accompanied by the river and also the famous sugar mill canal, coming into contact with vegetation composed of large trees such as mulembeiras and the farmland of the local population.
Walking this route is a unique experience, and the path ends at the famous Catumbela weir.
  • Hilltop Cross — A must-see place. For those who enjoy beautiful landscapes, this is an unmissable spot to visit in Catumbela.
Located at the top of the hill, the 360º view provides an unforgettable image. Whether it is the view of the city, the small plantations of local communities, the Catumbela River, or the distant horizon, this is truly a place to visit.
