Description

A fascinating journey through the heart of southern Angola, where landscape, cultural and historical diversity unfolds with every kilometer traveled. Connecting the city of Menongue to vibrant Lubango, this route is much more than a simple road trip — it is a deep immersion into Angolan authenticity. Departing from Menongue, capital of Cuando Cubango province, the traveler is surrounded by vast savannas, miombo forests and rivers that shape the scenery with natural serenity. The region stands out for its ecological richness and for the presence of traditional communities that preserve ancestral customs, offering a genuine cultural experience. As the road progresses toward Huíla province, the scenery gradually transforms. Open plains give way to steeper relief, green hills and impressive rock formations. The geographical transition makes the route visually dynamic, providing multiple opportunities for contemplation, photography and direct contact with nature.

Additional Information
  • Monument to King Muene Vunongue (Roundabout) - Inaugurated in 2015, the statue of King Tchinhama Mwene Vunongue, a historical and cultural symbol of the Nganguela people who lived from 1800 to 1886. Menongue is a city where history and cultural identity are deeply connected to the territory. One of its most important urban landmarks is the roundabout dedicated to King Muene Vunongue, a symbolic space that pays tribute to one of the most relevant figures in the traditional history of the Nganguela people.
  • Catholic Mission of Sendje - Cuchi - In 1953, as a result of the development of the Portuguese Province, the Congregation accepted the challenge of launching missions in Angola. From Porto to Cuchi, six missionaries were sent that year, who began establishing missions there. Within a few years, the missionary zeal of those men had already spread the Redemptorist charism throughout Angola, with new missionaries being sent every year to join them.
  • Visit to Mumba Lodge - Rest, nature, and authenticity in the heart of Huíla. In the heart of Huíla province, among valleys, savannas, and the fresh mountain breeze, stands Mumba Lodge — a destination designed for those seeking to disconnect from routine and reconnect with nature. Located near Fazenda Mumba, the lodge combines rustic comfort with the charm of a rural setting, offering a welcoming hospitality experience inspired by Angolan culture and lifestyle.
  • Saint John of the Cross Church - Located in the Municipality of Capelongo, in Huíla Province, São João da Cruz Church is one of the main religious and community landmarks in the region. Situated in a territory that recently gained administrative autonomy, the temple holds particular significance as a spiritual meeting point and an identity reference for the local population. The church serves the Catholic community of Capelongo and the surrounding areas, playing a central role in the social and religious life of the municipality.
  • Matala Dam - The Matala Dam began construction in 1954 on the Cunene River. After its inauguration, it was renamed Salazar Dam, crossed by a bridge nine hundred and twenty-nine meters long with two decks, one for cars and another for trains. The construction of the dam itself generated small neighborhoods for its employees, similar to other companies. An urbanization plan for Matala was drawn up by architect Vasco Morais Soares, undated.
