Matala Dam

Matala Dam
Matala Dam

It is located east of the Municipality and north of the Province towards Cuando Cubango, and is more than two kilometers long.

After its inauguration, it would come to be called Salazar Dam, crossed by a bridge measuring nine hundred and twenty-nine meters in length and featuring two decks, one for automobiles and the other for trains.
The construction of the dam would itself generate small residential neighborhoods for its employees, following the model of other companies.
An urbanization plan was prepared for Matala, designed by the architect Vasco Morais Soares, undated. The connections to other cities and settlements made clear the urban network created within the territory.

The Matala Hydroelectric Dam, built in the 1950s, plays a crucial role in supplying electrical energy to the region and beyond. By damming the river waters, it creates a reservoir which, when released in a controlled manner, activates electricity-generating turbines.
This contributes significantly to the energy matrix, reducing dependence on non-renewable sources and mitigating environmental impacts. In addition, the stability in energy supply drives local economic development.
It is located to the east of the municipality and to the north of the province, towards the neighboring province of Cuando Cubango, and stretches for more than one kilometer.
Along it there are many natural landscapes (river reservoirs), which, besides providing recreation, also allow fishing, farming, and the production of clay handicrafts;

It allows the increase of electrical energy production and improves the conditions for using the water retained in the reservoir for irrigation across a vast agricultural area, in addition to providing greater safety conditions for the population regarding the flow of products and floodwaters. The Matala Dam, also giving color to the municipality with a complete view of the Cunene River, features an enormous bridge carrying the railway line across it. One can also see the great waterfalls and a huge concentration of palm trees within the river.
