Tundavala Rift

Tundavala Rift
Tundavala Rift

The Tundavala Rift is a huge chasm of around 1200 m located in Serra da Leba, 18 km from Lubango, in the province of Huíla, in Angola.

It is at the cliffs of Tundavala that the Central Plateau of Angola ends. Here the plateau exceeds 2200 meters in altitude and drops abruptly to around 1000 meters in altitude, causing a stunning drop in level with colossal cracks in the mountain.
From here you can enjoy a magnificent landscape that stretches for dozens of kilometers.
As a geological object, it materializes a unique record of remote episodes in Earth's history, represents the westernmost succession of the Congo Craton, and comprises five formations: Tundavala, Humpata, Bruco, Cangalongue and Leba.
Located 18 km from the city of Lubango, the spectacular Fenda da Tundavala, provides the visitor with a stunning view of the Huíla Plateau with the Namibe on the horizon.
From this immense rocky wall, the great plateau gives way to an enormous undulating plain, which extends to the Atlantic coast.
Due to the unique landscape value it contains, it constitutes an example of a Geological Heritage, capable of ensuring a double function: promoting education in the field of Earth Sciences, particularly in geo-conservation, and due to its high Scenic content and Aesthetic value, it constitutes one of the most valuable attractions of the province, attracting visitors and consequently, contributing to the expansion of nature tourism, in particular geo tourism.
Each of the people who inhabit the Tundavala region culturally interprets the landscape differently.
For some it represents a place related to female fertility, translated into the expression: “kukambetaili okamono lucito kalumoneka olukavamjawa kokatala kombeki alucapupulwa kocela” (“No hit my child, because to obtain fertility it is necessary to go to the opening of the sacred mountain of Chela and then consult at the hospital of Katala”.
Or with the impossibility of being able to advance beyond the precipice, which is recognized in the expression: “Onculo yo uye konjenjelela” (“The place where the end of the world/abyss is found”).
In addition to these interpretations, Tundavala is associated with other representations, attributed by local communities, such as tales, songs, proverbs, beliefs and memories, which refer to symbolic and scenic elements, which reflect conflicts or which focus on water as a source of resources. and life.
Fenda da Tundavala was classified as one of the 7 wonders of Angola in the competition held in 2014.
