Why visit the province of Huila?

Why visit the province of Huila?

Huíla is one of the 21 provinces of Angola, located in the southern region of the country, and is the richest province in the southern part of Angola. Its capital is the city and municipality of Lubango.
According to population projections from 2018, prepared by the National Institute of Statistics, it has a population of 2,819,253 inhabitants and covers an area of 79,023 km², making it the most populous province in Angola after Luanda.
Huíla consists of 21 municipalities: Hoque, Galangue, Capunda Cavilongo, Capelongo, Dongo, Chituto, Viti Vivali, Palanca, Chicungo, Caconda, Cacula, Caluquembe, Chiange, Chibia, Chicomba, Chipindo, Cuvango, Humpata, Jamba, Lubango, Matala, Quilengues, Quipungo

The European presence in the region began in 1627 with a Portuguese-Spanish expedition led by Lopo Soares Lasso, departing from the city of Moçâmedes and reaching the Serra da Chela, from where it was possible to see the Huíla plateau and the vast valley under the control of the soba Calubango, the Country of Humbi-Onene.
The basic exploration route, between the 17th and 18th centuries, followed the courses of the Giraul, Neves, Caculavar, Calonga, Cunene, and Cuunje rivers, departing from Moçâmedes, passing through Bibala, Planalto da Humpata, Quipungo, and Matala, until reaching Caconda. Thus, the Giraul and Cunene basins were the first safe exploration routes, given the availability of water. The choice of Caconda as an advanced post fulfilled three objectives: as a safer alternative route than the northern and central regions of Angola, still dominated by the powerful kingdoms of Dongo-Matamba, Cassange-Jaga, Huambo, and Bailundo; control of a region that was less socio-politically organized compared to the rest of the Angolan territory and with very fertile valleys; and proximity to the densely populated and prosperous agricultural central-plains region. The route following the main course of the Cunene River was only explored in the second half of the 19th century.
