CHRIST THE KING MONUMENT

CHRIST THE KING MONUMENT
CHRIST THE KING MONUMENT

It was built in 1957, based on the similarity that the City of Sá da Bandeira had with the headquarters of the island of Madeira, where the first contingents of settlers mandated by the Portuguese Government came from between 1884/85.

The Statue of Christ the King is a religious monument erected at an altitude of 2,100 meters at one of the ends of the Serra da Chela and dedicated to Jesus Christ, built on a base of cement and hydraulic lime, the monument rests on a foundation of stones, cement and brick, with two levels supporting a staircase, the last being the more practical to see the statue.

Monument of religious architecture, dating from 1957, erected at an altitude of 2,130m, in the Chela mountain range, opposite the city of Lubango, 28 meters high, allows the visitor a privileged view over the city, functioning as a 360º viewpoint of what is also known as the city of Cristo-Rei.

The work was designed and directed by Engineer Carlos Frazão Sardinha, based on a stone base, has two levels linked together by a small staircase, 14 meters high.

Representative symbol of the communities of Huíla, fruit of faith and religion, in particular the affirmation of Christianity in the plateau region of Chela and simultaneously seen as a landmark of protection, being its character symbolic that makes it a monument.

It is anticipated that there will be a need to carry out a project to interpret and correct the landscape: symbolism, viewpoint and heritage.

It was designed by Eng. Carlos Frazão Sardinha, inspired by the monument to Christ King of Almada in Portugal, as a symbolism of faith and devotion to Christianity. Its construction was completed in 1956 and is the maximum exponent of a range of religious buildings built by colonizers in this region from Angola.

A Christ the Redeemer that embraces and contemplates the monumental Vale do Lubango... From its viewpoint, visitors can also fully embrace the capital of the province of Huíla and contemplate probably the most beautiful sunset in Angola.

Currently the monument, in addition to being a major tourist attraction in Lubango, is also one of the privileged spots for religious pilgrimages. It bears the emblem of National Historical Heritage that was awarded to it in 2014.
