Das Neves Dam

Das Neves Dam
Das Neves Dam

It is a water retention dam for irrigation of the Humpata perimeter and offers a good environment and landscapes that make it possible to carry out Pick-Nicks and Camping.

Characterized as a masonry dam, with a length of 447 meters and a height of 15 meters, it falls into the category of a “large dam,” with a useful capacity of 6.4 million cubic meters, which can reach up to seven million during the rainy season.
It represents a strategic infrastructure for local agriculture and, at the same time, a promising space for leisure and rural tourism.
Built with the purpose of irrigating the agricultural perimeter of Humpata, the dam supplies at least part of an irrigation system that covers a significant area — traditionally around 1,400 hectares according to irrigation data from the region.
The reservoir of the Neves Dam has a storage capacity of approximately 6.4 million cubic meters of water.

In recent years, hydrological replenishment and rehabilitation efforts have been essential: in 2019, desilting interventions and structural repairs once again increased the storage volume, ensuring irrigation during the dry season.
These improvements are fundamental to local agricultural production — at the time of rehabilitation, it was estimated that 1,450 farmers benefited from the irrigation canals, promoting significant annual production of cereals, fruits, and vegetables, with a direct impact on income and food security for the rural population of Humpata.
Beyond its agricultural function, the Neves Dam stands out for its natural environment and surrounding landscape, inviting leisure activities: picnics and camping are mentioned as possibilities for visitors to the area.
Access is relatively easy — about 6 km from the former municipal administration of Humpata — which facilitates weekend outings for families, groups of friends, or small excursions.
The presence of local peoples, namely the Mumuilas, who speak the Nhaneka-Humbi and Umbundu dialects, gives the area an interesting cultural character, opening up possibilities for more conscious community-based tourism that values local identity.

The Neves Dam represents more than just a water reservoir: it is a key element of irrigated agriculture in Huíla and a potential hub for rural and nature tourism.
Its rehabilitation and maintenance are essential to ensure water security, promote agricultural production, and open perspectives for local and tourism development.
With investment and planning, it could become a symbol of balance between productive use and environmental conservation, benefiting farmers, communities, and visitors alike.
