Slave Quintalão

The Slave Yard, in Egipto Praia, is one of the most memorable sites on Angola's central coast. This site served as a yard for the concentration and sorting of captives before sale and shipment, forming part of the local Slave Route. Next door, the "Slave Shop" served the commercial function of the slave trade. Today, the complex is in ruins, but retains significant historical and symbolic value.
Egipto Praia is located northwest of Lobito, near the mouth of the Balombo River (Navala Beach), an area of alm groves, artisanal fishing, and great potential for ecotourism. It is a territory with a rich historical and scenic heritage, combining natural heritage with vestiges from the slave trade period.
Records describe the Quintalão (courtyard) and the Loja (shop) as adjacent structures; adjacent to the Quintalão was also an associated "dormitory." Dimensions: Quintalão ≈ 25 m (W) × 65 m (L) and Dormitory ≈ 9 m (W) × 45 m (L).
Even in ruins, the layout of the courtyard, the remaining masonry, and the connection with the Balombo River are legible.
