THE STORY
“Your Valentine” or “From your Valentine”
According to legend, Bishop Valentine lived in the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. At the time, the Empire was involved in many wars and few men enlisted as soldiers.
Emperor Claudius II believed the reasons were associated with the fact that no one wanted to leave their wives, fiancées, and girlfriends behind to venture into war.
The emperor decreed that marriage was forbidden during wars, but lovers sought out the presbyter Valentine, as he was the only one in the Empire who continued to perform marriages.
When his practice was discovered, Presbyter Valentine was arrested and sentenced to death.
During this period, many people sent him letters and flowers saying they still believed in love and thanking him for his actions.
While in prison, he fell in love with the blind daughter of one of the jailers.
Legend says that before dying, on February 14, 269 AD, Valentine declared his love to the jailer’s daughter. The young woman brought meals daily to the prisoners and was the one who received Valentine’s last letter, and as he said goodbye, she was able to see.
The farewell letter was signed: “your eternal Valentine” (a phrase still printed on Valentine’s Day cards).
The Catholic Church declared Saint Valentine’s Day as Lovers’ Day as early as the 10th century, with the aim of encouraging couples who intended to proceed with marriage as a “legitimate” way to start a family.
Saint Valentine’s Day is the day when love is celebrated, and this includes all forms of love, whether friendship or a romantic relationship.
On this day, the exchange of cards or gifts is customary, and many people take advantage of the date not only to reaffirm their love, but also to express interest in a possible new love.
This date corresponds to Lovers’ Day. A curious fact about Saint Valentine’s Day: despite rumors that florists and confectioners invented this day just to increase their sales, it is, interestingly, the only day of the year when men buy more flowers than women.
Whatever your declaration of love may be, the important thing is that you love!
