Cuanza Sul is one of the 18 provinces of Angola, located in the central region of the country. Its capital is in the city and municipality of Sumbe. The province is administratively divided into 12 municipalities and 32 communes, consisting of the municipalities of Amboim, Cassongue, Cela, Conda, Ebo, Libolo, Mussende, Porto Amboim, Quilenda, Quibala, Seles, and Sumbe. The main ethnic groups present in the province are the Mbundu people in the north, who speak Kimbundu, and the Ovimbundu people in the south, who speak Umbundu. The main language spoken is Portuguese. The province is famous for its rock paintings from the Neolithic period and ruins of ancient fortresses, such as Fortaleza do Amboim, Fortim do Quicombo, Forte da Quibala, and Fortaleza de Calulu. In this province, you can find the Luvili Mountains, the Sanga and Bimbe Ranges, the Subplateaus and Plateaus of Congolo and Mombolo, the Amboim-Seles Escarpments, the Libolo Escarpments, the Libolo-Seles Subplateau, and the Amboim Plateau (or Gabela Plateau), the latter being an important cotton and coffee region.
