Quibala Fortress
Built in the late 19th century atop an imposing granite massif, the Quibala Fortress dominates the landscape and the town that grew at its feet.
Its construction is linked to the Portuguese military advance into the interior of Angola and the resistance of local populations against colonial occupation.
Due to its strategic location, the fort allowed for control over the routes connecting the coast of Cuanza Sul to the Central Highlands.
During the Colonial War (1961–1974), it was once again used as a military barracks.
Now in ruins, it remains an important testament to the history of Quibala and the resistance of its people.
In 2017, it was officially designated as National Historical-Cultural Heritage.
