Our Lady of Victoria Church of Massangano
Massangano village once served as the provisional capital of Angola during the Dutch occupation of Luanda, under the rule of the Portuguese captain Paulo Dias de Novais, who died and was buried in the same locality.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Victory, built in the 16th century and restructured in 2011 by the Capuchin priests, is the main attraction for both national and international visitors, who often travel there to take part in the pilgrimage held during the first half of August. It is a religious event organized by the Catholic Church in various parts of the country as an expression of faith.
The site also contains a cemetery where the mortal remains of 19 Capuchin friars rest. They died from illness during the reign of Ngola Quiluange. Also located in the village are the courthouse and the detention house, the first administrative chamber of Angola, the slave cross and square, and the fortress built by the Portuguese to defend against Dutch invasions advancing along the Kwanza River corridor.
