Cambambe Fortress

Cambambe Fortress
Cambambe Fortress

The Cambambe Fortress was built by Portuguese forces in 1604, in the context of the penetration and conquest of the Angolan territory through the Cuanza River, the largest in the country, ensuring the defense of the presidio (military colonization establishment) then founded.
Occupying the Cambambe mountain region cost the Portuguese dearly, due to the resistance offered by the natives to foreign conquest. In addition to solidifying Portuguese military presence, the presidio became an active trading post for goods and slaves captured in the region, awaiting transport to the American continent.
Currently in ruins, preservation works on the historical, archaeological, and cultural heritage were carried out in 2016 by the Ministry of Culture.

Sixteenth-century military architecture. Irregular quadrangular sixteenth-century fortress, consisting of polygonal bastions arranged at the vertices, topped with battlements and gunports, accessed by ramps or stairs on the interior, and straight curtains. It features upright, low walls, with the portal facing east, in a flattened arch and elevated and cutout top, with a plaque alluding to the construction and the coat of arms of Portugal. Inside, besides the church, it houses the trading post building, rectangular in plan, facades of a single-story supported by buttresses at the corners, the main facade pierced by a arched portal, between two windows. The fortress was built in the context of the penetration and conquest of the interior of the Angolan territory, along the Cuanza River, the largest in the country, ensuring the defense of the trading post built inside, a commercial post for goods and slaves captured in the region, awaiting transport to the American continent.
