Tchinhanha or Cacofi Island

Located in the southwest of the municipality of Chicomba, in Huíla Province, Tchihanhanha Island, also known as Cacofi, stands out as one of the most unique natural retreats in the Cunene River valley. Stretching for more than five kilometres, the island forms a secluded territory enclosed by the river's waters, offering landscapes of remarkable ecological and tourism value.

The island is located approximately 110 kilometres from the municipal headquarters of Chicomba and just one kilometre from the Lusseque sector, in the Commune of Kutenda, making it relatively accessible to local and regional visitors. Administratively, it borders the municipality of Matala to the south and the Commune of Dongo, belonging to the municipality of Jamba, to the north.
From an environmental perspective, Tchihanhanha stands out for its strong connection to the Cunene River ecosystem. The regular presence of large hippopotamuses, visible from the riverbanks, gives the area an almost untamed character that is rare in other parts of the province. The aquatic fauna also supports artisanal fishing, which is the main livelihood for the families living on the island.
The small houses built for fishermen and permanent residents reflect a simple way of life, marked by hospitality and a close relationship with the river. Local handicrafts, made from natural materials, are another element that enriches the visitor experience, showcasing cultural practices deeply rooted in the riverside tradition.
Despite its considerable tourism potential (whether for nature tourism, wildlife observation, or recreational fishing), Tchihanhanha Island still faces structural limitations. The absence of tour guides, as well as visitor support infrastructure, remains a challenge to the site's sustainable development, but also represents an opportunity for future community-based and institutional projects.
