Angola Geodetic Center

Partially destroyed during the armed conflict that the country experienced, the geodesic center of Angola, which is under the supervision of the Catholic Church, benefited from renovation and expansion works, as well as the replacement of a new statue of Christ the King.

In On this occasion, the provincial governor, Boavida Neto, said that the place presents “the most brilliant being that passed through the earth, Jesus Christ” and is a “center of convergence of peace and love, providing men with good values for society”.

The geodesic center of Angola, built by the first aviators who passed through there, was approved by the registration services in 1948, reaching the conclusion that from “North to South, East to West” its distance was equal.

On site, There is a historical landmark of Christ the King, built in marble during the time of Father D. Armando dos Santos Amaral, who became the first Bishop of Benguela. D. Armando dos Santos Amaral placed the first image of Christ the King at the site, to say exactly that only with him could Angola walk, as it was the center of all humanity and also the center of the Angolan people.

This wish was fulfilled in 1969 with the placement of the image of Christ the King, sculpted by the Portuguese Montezinho, which consequently became a sacred and cult place.

With the emergence of the armed conflict that devastated the country, the geodesic center of Angola was partially destroyed, especially the image of Christ the King, hence the reason for having benefited from rehabilitation works.
The works began in 2009 and the work was completed in 2014.
