Catholic Mission Our Lady of Fátima do Ndunde

The mission played a decisive role in the evangelization, education, and social assistance of the southern region of Benguela.

History of the construction
The mission was officially founded on July 26, 1927, in an area of approximately 500 hectares, following authorization from the Portuguese colonial government to the Spiritan Missionaries (Congregation of the Holy Spirit).
The first missionary assigned to the site was Father Figueiredo.
Before the arrival of the missionaries, the region was known as Sessembo, inhabited by Umbundu communities linked to the Vanganda and Vahanha groups. Many of the first inhabitants settled precisely in the area that would later become the Mission of Ndunde.
In its early years, the mission grew rapidly: by 1932 there were already around 4,000 baptized people, and a missionary seminary was established;

The site became a training center for catechists and evangelists for other regions of Angola.
In 1946, the mission came under the administration of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette (Salettines), Swiss missionaries who profoundly shaped the spiritual and educational identity of Ndunde.

The church of Ndunde is often referred to as the first church dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima in Southern Africa. Marian devotion became one of the spiritual pillars of the mission since the colonial period.
Throughout its history, the mission became an important center for evangelization; catechetical formation; religious education; literacy; medical assistance; vocational training.

The mission also had a strong cultural and linguistic influence. Its printing press produced some of the first books in the Umbundu language in the region.
During the Angolan civil war, the mission suffered abandonment, attacks, and destruction, having been abandoned in 1980, reoccupied in 1992, and evacuated again in 2000 following attacks and the kidnapping of missionaries, officially reopening in 2003.

Architectural structure
The architecture of the Mission of Ndunde follows the typical model of the large rural Catholic missions of the colonial missionary period, combining European influence with adaptation to the local climate.

Large main church;
Simple and monumental façade;
Bell tower;
Sloped roof;
Thick masonry walls;
Wide verandas and side corridors;
Tall windows for natural ventilation;
Central missionary courtyard.

Even after decades of war and degradation, the mission continues to be one of the most important religious and historical symbols of the Ganda region.
