Cubal Railway Station

Cubal Railway Station
Cubal Railway Station

The Cubal Railway Station is one of the most important historical infrastructures in the municipality of Cubal, having been linked to the economic, urban and social development of the region since the beginning of the 20th century.

Integrated into the historic Benguela Railway (CFB), the station played a fundamental role in connecting the Angolan coast to the central plateau, making Cubal an important railway and commercial hub.
The arrival of the railway in Cubal, in 1908, profoundly marked the growth of what was then a small settlement. From that moment onwards, the locality began to develop as a strategic point for transportation, agricultural trade, and the circulation of people and goods between the provinces of Benguela, Huambo, Bié, and Moxico. The development of sisal plantations and the region’s agricultural and livestock activities was directly linked to the presence of the railway line and the railway station.

Architecturally, the station features characteristics typical of the old colonial CFB stations, standing out for its single-storey main building, its prominent two-storey tower, and its four-sided tiled roof. The architectural model used follows standards applied in other railway stations built along the Benguela Railway line.
For decades, the station was one of the main symbols of mobility and progress in Cubal. Passengers, agricultural products, commercial goods, and materials destined for Angola’s inland regions passed through it. Railway traffic boosted the urban growth of the city and helped transform Cubal into an important economic hub between the coast and the central plateau.

With the beginning of the Angolan civil war, much of the railway circulation was interrupted, seriously affecting the operation of the station and the railway line. For many years, train traffic remained reduced or completely suspended in several sections of the CFB. After the period of peace and national reconciliation, rehabilitation works on the railway line began, including bridges, stations, and circulation systems.
The reopening of the Lobito–Cubal railway section, in 2004 and 2005, symbolised the rebirth of the Benguela Railway in the region. The restoration of the railway station made it possible to re-establish important transport connections and partially revitalise the local economy, once again reinforcing Cubal’s strategic role in the national railway system.
Currently, the Cubal Railway Station continues to be a historical, heritage, and cultural landmark of the city. In addition to its transport function, it represents the memory of Angolan railway development and the importance that the Benguela Railway had in the country’s economic and territorial integration.
