Luanda

Luanda is the smallest province in Angola, with an area of 24,651 km².
Its approximate population is 5 million inhabitants. Its capital is Luanda, the largest city and capital of Angola. Luanda is also the most industrialized province of Angola with the greatest economic growth, as it suffered few effects from the civil war and also because it benefited from the exodus of populations from their areas of origin to Luanda. With the economic and social stability of recent years, Luanda has enjoyed numerous new investments.

Due to the administrative reform of 2011,1 the province saw its area expanded, now having seven municipalities:2
  • Cacuaco
  • Beautiful
  • Cazenga
  • Ícolo and Bengo
  • Luanda
  • Quiçama
  • Viana
The previous municipalities of Ingombota, Kilamba Kiaxi, Maianga, Rangel, Samba and Sambizanga became the new municipality of Luanda.3
Luanda has a bay and a sandbank, Ilha de Luanda, which stretches over more than fourteen kilometers of beaches, restaurants and fishermen's houses. The city center is undergoing transformations and very sophisticated skyscrapers contrast with the musseques on the outskirts of the city. It is believed that more than 70% of the capital's population lives in suburban areas. Luanda Sul is the area with the greatest housing development and is the place where the first shopping center in Angola — Belas Shopping — was built in the municipality of Belas.

Climate and vegetation

The province is semi-arid with a hot and dry tropical climate. The province's average annual temperature is between 25 °C and 26 °C, with a maximum of 27 °C, coinciding with the rainy season. July and August are cooler months, especially on the coast, where the temperature drops just below 25°C. The region's climate is influenced by the proximity of the sea — Benguela Current — and, despite not being too hot, it is humid.

In non-urban areas, the most common vegetation is grass and few trees, with emphasis on baobab (Adansonia digitata). Kissama National Park is also part of the province of Luanda.
