May 1st - Worker's Day

Workers' Day, Labour Day, or International Workers' Day is an international commemorative date dedicated to workers, celebrated annually on May 1st in almost all countries worldwide, being a public holiday in many of them.
This tribute dates back to May 1st, 1886, when a strike started in the North American city of Chicago with the aim of achieving better working conditions, primarily the reduction of the daily working hours, which reached up to 17 hours, to eight hours. During the demonstration, there were clashes with the police, resulting in arrests and deaths of workers. This event would inspire many other protests that followed. These labor struggles culminated in a series of rights, provided by laws and protected by constitutions.
Between the world wars, the maximum daily working hours were set at eight hours in most industrialized countries.
In the liturgical calendar, the day celebrates the memory of Saint Joseph the Worker, the patron saint of workers.
