Lagoa do Feitiço (Spell Lagoon)

Lagoa do Feitiço (Spell Lagoon)
Lagoa do Feitiço (Spell Lagoon)

This place is more than an ordinary lagoon: for the locals, it is a sacred space.

Formerly known as Ujia Ya Mbuila, is one of the sites of greatest cultural and legendary significance in Uíge province. Located near the village of Dambi à Ngola—in the Aldeia Viçosa commune, Dange Quitexe municipality—it is renowned for the tranquility of its waters, its surrounding landscape, and the oral traditions passed down through generations.
According to the region's elders, a settlement named Ngungo Indua once stood where the lagoon is now located. Tradition holds that the village was submerged following a seemingly light rainstorm many centuries ago. This narrative lacks documentary evidence and should be understood as part of the local communities' oral and spiritual heritage.
Another version of the legend links the lagoon's current name to a Portuguese farmer who allegedly disregarded warnings from traditional authorities and subsequently suffered a series of family misfortunes.
Following that episode, the site reportedly came to be known as Lagoa do Feitiço.

Visiting the site involves traditional practices of showing respect and seeking permission. Before approaching the water, visitors must contact the authorities of Dambi à Ngola village; they may perform symbolic rituals involving beverages and spoken words addressed to the spirits believed to protect the lagoon.
Due to its scenic value and the array of legends, beliefs, and community practices associated with it, Lagoa do Feitiço stands as a significant example of Uíge's intangible cultural heritage.
Visits should be undertaken with a local guide, respecting the directives of traditional authorities and avoiding the presentation of community narratives as scientifically proven events.
