Montipa Thermal Waters

In the municipality of Bibala, you will find the Montipa Thermal Springs, one of the natural resources of southern Angola. Among rocky formations and scattered vegetation, the thermal spring emerges with hot, clear water known for its therapeutic properties, becoming an increasingly recognised attraction for visitors, researchers, and nature-tourism enthusiasts.
The waters of Montipa have unique characteristics: they reach temperatures of around 49 °C, have low mineralisation and a naturally alkaline pH. These elements have traditionally linked them to therapeutic uses, from relaxing baths to hydrotherapy practices, generating interest in the development of health tourism in Namibe.
Despite their great potential, the area remains underdeveloped. Limited access and the lack of basic infrastructure prevent Montipa from becoming a fully structured destination. However, growing interest is opening new opportunities. Recent studies recommend creating walking trails, designated bathing areas, visitor facilities, and environmental education programmes, integrating the local community in managing and preserving this rare resource.
More than a tourist attraction, Montipa represents a natural heritage that must be protected and valued. Set in one of the country’s most striking landscapes, between ochre mountains and the vast silence of the desert, this thermal spring gathers unique conditions to promote sustainable, diversified tourism aligned with the future of the Namibe region.
