Chicapa River

Chicapa River
Chicapa River

Also known as Tchicapa, Tchikapa, or Tshikapa.

It is an important watercourse in Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, belonging to the Congo River basin.
It rises at Lake Chicapa, a wetland area located at an altitude of approximately 1,400 metres, about 25 kilometres south of the municipality of Alto Chicapa.
With an estimated length of approximately 870 kilometres, the river flows predominantly from south to north, crossing the provinces of Lunda Sul and Lunda Norte.
Along part of its course, it forms a section of the border between Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, then continuing into Congolese territory, where it flows into the Kasai River, near the city of Tshikapa.

The Chicapa River is also connected to the city of Saurimo, contributing to water supply and energy production through the Chicapa Hydroelectric Power Plant. Its valley encompasses one of the most important diamond-producing regions in northeastern Angola.
Along the river and its tributaries are alluvial deposits and kimberlite formations that have historically contributed to the development of mining activities in the Lunda provinces.
Due to its natural, economic and scenic value, the Chicapa River is one of the most important hydrographic features of eastern Angola.
