Golungo Alto Forest Reserve

It is one of the province's key forest areas and is officially recognized for its natural, environmental, and tourism value.
The reserve features a landscape characterized by abundant vegetation, valleys, hills, and watercourses, situated in a region known for its plant diversity and natural conditions favorable to the growth of various plant species.
The Golungo Alto area also boasts a long agricultural tradition, particularly linked to the production of coffee and other tropical crops.

Regarding wildlife, there are reports of the presence of antelopes, giant forest buffalo (*pacaças*), small mammals, birds, and elephants.
The recent presence of elephants was noted by the Institute for Forest Development, which also warned of the impact of poaching on these animals. However, a comprehensive assessment of the existing wildlife requires up-to-date scientific surveys.

In 2014, the Golungo Alto Forest Reserve represented Cuanza Norte province as one of the 27 finalists in the "Seven Natural Wonders of Angola" competition. Although it was not selected as one of the seven winners, its participation helped raise awareness of its scenic and environmental importance.
Currently, the reserve holds potential for the development of nature tourism, hiking, birdwatching, environmental education, and scientific research.

However, efforts to enhance the reserve must be accompanied by monitoring and conservation measures, as illegal logging, charcoal production, and poaching have been identified as threats to the forest's integrity.
