A visit to Love Island, on vacation or on weekends, has always been a distraction and a hobby for neolisboetas and outsiders.
Located 40 km east of Morro Moco, the highest point in Angola, and about 45 km northwest of the city of Huambo, the island of love is one of those corners of nature that fills us with emotions, admiration and even amazement.
The waterfalls that form one of the main attractions of this piece of paradise occur on the Cuito River, one of the many rivers in Angola that contribute to the Kalahari Basin, where they flow into an explosion of life in the middle of the desert.
The name of the attraction Ilha dos Amores is linked to the inauguration of the bridge over the Kuito River in September 1933, when a group of workers involved in the construction of the bridge wanted to find a place to hold a celebratory lunch.
After lunch, this place was marked from various perspectives and so this group of workers, in agreement with the Soba Grande (at the time Soba Chipala), brought this fact to the attention of the then Chief of the Chipeio administrative post.
The place was especially well-equipped with small infrastructures that provided greater comfort to visitors, such as places to rest and eat, with a pedestrian path that reached its most interesting corners, some of which were crossed by bridges or other means of access.
After independence, the place was abandoned for a long time, and is currently under private exploitation, which seems to indicate a lack of public interest in one of the jewels of Huambo's natural heritage.
