Nganda La-Kawe stones

The Nganda and La Kawe Rocks are monumental rock formations located near the city of Caála in the province of Huambo, Angola. These rocks are not only impressive from a geological point of view, but also carry deep cultural and historical significance for the local people.
Located about 5 km from the city of Caála, the Nganda and La Kawe Rocks are prominent granite formations that stand out in the landscape of the central Angolan plateau. The Caué Rock, near the road to Ecunha, is 112 meters high. The Nganda Rock rises to 120 meters high. The site is between 1710 and 1742 meters above sea level. Between Nganda and Caué, located closer to Nganda, there is another granite elevation that reaches 42 meters in height.

The Nganda Stone is traditionally associated with the feminine universe, while the La Kawe Stone represents the masculine universe, symbolizing the duality and complementarity present in the local cosmology.
According to oral tradition, these stones are linked to the history of the Kingdom of Huambo. Soma Inene (King) Wambu Kalunga, an Imbangala hunter from the Cela region, settled in the area where the stones are located today, founding the kingdom by merging his clan with the local Nganda. The Nganda Stone and the La Kawe Stone thus became spiritual and cultural symbols of the region.
In addition, there are reports that Wambu Kalunga was buried with honors at the foot of the La Kawe Stone, accompanied by two women who, according to tradition, were buried alive with him, a common practice at the time for figures of great importance.

On September 3, 1902, during the occupation campaigns of the central plateau of Angola by Portuguese colonial forces, a bloody battle took place near these rock formations. The Portuguese military column, commanded by the governor of Benguela, Teixeira Moutinho, faced resistance from the local inhabitants. In this confrontation, the local chief and many natives lost their lives. On the Portuguese side, there were also casualties, including the death of Sergeant Canas and an indigenous soldier who tried to rescue the sergeant's body in the middle of the battlefield.

This event took place in the context of the Second Luso-Ovimbundu War (1890–1904), an armed conflict between the Ovimbundu kingdoms and the Portuguese Empire, motivated by Portuguese colonial ambitions and control of trade routes. The battle at the Nganda and La Kawe Rocks symbolizes the resistance of the local peoples to colonial occupation and is an important milestone in the history of the region.
Today, the Nganda and La Kawe Rocks are recognized not only for their natural grandeur, but also as sites of historical memory, representing the struggle and resistance of the Ovimbundu peoples against colonization.
